    New puppy :) advice needed

    Thursday, December 4, 2008, 08:50 PM [General]

I'm fairly experienced with dogs, just rescued my first puppy, and she is surprisingly well behaved, but I need advice on the following:

    eating crap
nose to the ground and eats everything outside
pulls on leash, yet wont walk - sits down
    jumps
    counter surfer
    doesn't understand no or come

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Hi Erin,

I have trained three puppies over the years and they continue to surprise me. As far as eating crap (I assume you mean feces), if it is their own, there is a product called Forbid that you sprinkle on their food. It makes their crap taste like, well, crap. You might also try picking it up as soon as you can so it is not tempting. As for walking, try a Gentle Leader or Halti. They are head halters and work by pulling the dog's nose down when they try to pull. They are better than choke collars. Jumping on people can be corrected by gently stepping on the back toes or, again gently, by bringing your knee up into the puppy's chest as the puppy attempts to jump. Counter surfer -- push everything back as far as you can. Patience, patience, patience with all training. Obedience classes would be a good investment as well. Good luck!!!

About eating crap. Watch him and when he goes for the crap , hold his face and say OFF firmly. Then let him go and he will go for it again and repeat Off and hold his face. Watch and do this over again until you say off and he stops without you holding his face. When he finaly does give him a treat or praise him.. good boy and pat him. Watch him and if he goes for it again say off firmly and give him praise if he listens if not hold his face and say off again. when you walk him and he goes to smell crap say off. eventualy he gets it. Anything you dont want him to touch say OFF. Praise him if he stays away even if you dont say off. you can say good off.
