Choosing a name for your pet

Think "Fido" is more of a "Fluffy"?

Over the course of his life, you’ll be calling your dog’s name thousands and thousands of time. So you if you’re planning on changing your adopted dog’s name, you’ll want choose carefully. Here are some things to think about while making your decision:

  • Is it a name that you’ll want to call out publicly in a park?
  • Is the name so common that if you do call it out in a park, a pack of dogs will come running to you?
  • Don’t choose a name that is similar to a command such as “Kitt”. To be on the safe side, you may want to consider a two-syllable name.
  • If the pet is older, consider keeping his name or making just a slight tweak. For example, you may want to rename “Allie” as “Callie”
  • Involve the whole family in name generation. It’s a fun exercise and you’ll come up with something that everyone will love.
  • Aside from personality, you may find inspiration in celebrity names, movie dogs, sports players or teams, a favourite book character or even a long-lost aunt.

If you’re still unsure about your new choice of name, you can always give it a test run for a day or so. Once you officially decide on a name, be sure to reward your dog when he responds to it.
